Hello,

I have some more newbie questions that I need some help on, specifically skybox problems.

When I try adding a skybox, I just get things that look really weird. From what I see on tutorials, I just see people create a giant brush, and make it hollow. I tried this and things looked very...strange.

When I tried doing individual walls one at a time, I also got things to look quite..funky. The skybox wall would be in front of other brushes, even though it was clearly behind all my other objects.

Are these what people call leaks? I see the people do it in the YouTube tutorials so easy, but I'm having some tough times. Is there a small simple step I am overlooking or something?

Sorry everyone I am very new to this. :p

p.s. sorry if the pictures come out looking huge. How do I upload them on to this website, to my album? Couldn't find it in control panel.

First of all, NEVER hollow out a brush. EVER.

Secondly, try copying everything except for the skybox brush into a new Hammer file, and then make the skybox.

The guy in the tutorial did say that it was a frowned upon method, hehe...

Anyways, tried what you said and got the same problem that appeared in the second screenshot. :(

Are you texturing it with an actual skybox texture, or the toolsskybox tool texture? Cause you need to use the tool and set the skybox you wanna use in the map properties.

As for the whole hollow box thing, yeah, it's bad. :p

Sometimes this happens to me with any given tool texture, but restarting Hammer fixes it.

?????

I've closed and opened multiple times, but no avail. It is only happening with skybox textures though. :(

Hmmm...

Not to familiar with proper terminology here yet, but I've been using the :applytexture: button and drawing out a huge block with the skybox texture. I haven't messed with any map properties. How do I do that?

You didn't answer the question, which skybox texture?

Make sure you use tools\toolsskybox as the texture for that brush.

:O

That what it was. Yea I was just grabbing any random skybox that I thought looked cool. It works fine with that one though. Thanks so much!! :)

One last question then. Say I want to make the map night-themed or dusk-themed. I'll have to tamper with the lighting to do all that, I figure?

If you look closely at maps that take place at night, you'll notice that the gameplay areas are actually very bright, and you only get the impression of darkness because of the out-of-bounds areas being dark (and of course the nighttime skybox).

Alright everybody, thanks for the lighting tips + tricks. I'll try to look into everything to the best of my ability. I'll make sure to ask some more questions if I'm stuck though. :p

Thanks again everyone! You're all helping me a lot. :)
