On the SPUF trading forums you can get a scrap for 8 crates if you're not picky. Most people want more, but realistically, crates are nearly worthless.
I got a reclaimed for 6 crates that no longer drop not long ago, you can bet that their value will rise if you stockpile them long enough... Crates really are the bane of TF2.

S1 crates are always wanted. White and Black paint have gone up a lot recently.

I also think S1's have a higher drop rate for unusuals. - but that may be a lie...
