OK, im looking at building a comp and I need some opinions on quad-core vs duel core processors.

Im looking at AMD processors, and have found this Dual-Core

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2905661&CatId=2328

and this Quad-Core

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103706

What im looking for is something that will complement my modeling, mapping, and of coarse gaming. When it comes to processors, im not very good at determining which was is a better deal and/or what would give me the best for my money.

Thanks

Quad-core. Compiling will be a lot faster with 4 threads than 2.

If you want something not too expensive, take nothing but amd, intel is usually really expensive compared to that.

<3 My Core2 Quad Q6600 for compiling :3

Same. I've overclocked to 3.0, about to try 3.2.

I would go for the Q9550 if you don't want to spend much.
If you have the money, go for the i7 or i5 (i7 is better, i5 cheaper. They both have 4 cores/8 threads). But that would probable require a full system upgrade (ram/cpu/motherboard)

Ehh, I'd actually suggest a two-core at a higher speed, since we're still in that place where a lot of games and apps are transitioning between using one, two, and four.

How many games really benefit more from two extra cores versus, say, a +25% better speed on two existing cores?

Obviously if you do a lot of graphics/video/compiling the quad-core becomes a lot more attractive since those are often easily parallelizable.

are the new i5 Intel processers not quite cheap now, and offer alot more performance for the price than the q66, but i guess u'd have to look at a new motherboard for the extra pins. but it would be more future proof i guess. i'm also think about buildings my own comp, woop

Yes, but maybe everyone telling you to go Intel may have swayed your opinion.

I seriously considered it, but like some people said, Intel processors can get crazy expensive and Im running on a budget. But considering that im building a computer for about $400 that will have room for upgrading and be able to play Crysis well (benchmark game :p) im pretty excited.
