Well, I've checked around and it looks like I'm not the only one having this problem... I can't seem to connect to Valve in order to launch Hammer. I seem to be able to connect to Steam just fine and play games, but not Hammer. People with this problem are getting this error:

Probably nothing to be done for it until Valve fixes the problem, but I thought I'd post on here to let everyone know that no, it's not just you, others are having the same issue.

Anybody know of a workaround?

Hmm this has happened to me now too, guess ill try rebooting and see if it fixes itself.

Everybody in the chat's been getting it since last night. I'm one of the few people with a working hammer, and that's only because I still haven't closed it.

I got this last night as well at around 12:40 am. It seems that everyone was effected, which stinks. Hopefully this is just a quick Hicc-up from the Steam Servers and not a serious problem.

only workaround i've seen posted to get into hammer is to use the sdk beta http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SDK_Beta and set the game to half life ep1

piss, Can't get into it either, using the SDK beta but I'm not willing to mess about in the ep1 version for what will probably be only tonight.

Damn still messed up. Probably gonna have to wait till afternoon for a fix, thats when they seem to update most times.

Restart steam, give it a go, works now.

Yup it does infact work now, I got it going too Happy mapping!

strange... does this mean you can't use Hammer when you aren't connected to the internet?

No you cant. You have to go into offline mode for it to work.
