Map file corrupted after adding Half Life 2 texture

So yeah, as it says in the title I added a half life graffiti texture to the map with the overlay tool, and it immediately crashed hammer. I tried booting up the map again, and it crashes hammer. I also tried booting up an auto save and it still doesn't work. The weird thing is, I backed up the map (thank god) beforehand, and THAT file still doesn't work. I rarely ask for help and I'm at a loss here.
Can anybody help? I can provide screenshots of whatever you need, and even the map files if that helps.

I think you can try to* solve this one by opening the .vmf file using the text editor (what you use to edit .txt files), searching for the texture name using "Find" and then deleting the overlay entirely, but I have never done this so be careful and keep a backup in case

As for the rest, i have no idea what could be causing it besides something you did and forgot about that hammer doesn't like, have you compiled it at least once? Did one of the compiles fire any weird errors?

As a reply to both of these, I think hammer itself is now the problem. All maps booting now crashes hammer, and so I edited the VMF and removed the graffiti texture. I'm having a guy I know test the files and to see if they work now, so soon I'll know. Not really sure what to do about hammer not working anymore, but that's a separate problem.
