Custom blend texture problem...

hey guys, so i made a custom blend texture folling this tutorial:

but it doesnt work. i have the vmt file. but i dont know where to put it. i placed it in the folders stated in the tutorial but it shows in hammer as a 64x64 pink checkers thing.

Could you post the specific info? I started messing w/ custom textures recently, and mine all showed as purple checkers until I realized I needed to add the basic info like decalscale and vertexalpha.
