I do want to mention that this isn't Valve's first encrypted pre-release event, and since it involves actual purchases and money changing hands I believe it's a safe bet any encryption scheme is done with standard Steam functionality rather than something ARG/Trolling-related. The risk of people being potentially unable to play on launch-day far outweighs the benefits of extra jokes or hints.

The joke is that people wouldn't be able to crack the files, as they'd be trying to turn an encrypted model file into an unencrypted MAP file. and map into script, script into model. Or whatever the combinations I said before were, reversed.

I don't think it'd be anything risky or anything, really. just renaming the .whatever in each file.
