Why did you guys name the gamemode "Push ctf"?

I have thought about this for a long time and it really bothers me as it doesn't make sense.

To me, the term "push" is used on a map where both teams have the same objective on a symmetric map.
"Push ctf" is basically the same as the dustbowl gamemode, but you capture with a flag rather than standing on a point with your teammates.

My point is; we don't call dustbowl a "push cp" map. We call maps like granary and badlands "push cp" maps, since both teams have the same objective. "Push ctf" is, in my head, a map like ctf_2fort or any other standard ctf map. It just seems to me like we're spreading a confusing name for a gamemode that should be called "attack/defend ctf".

I believe push sounds right, it is attack defend ofc but you gotta "push" the flag carrier into the capture zone. And it's a personal choice, I prefer calling a map "dustbowl-style" or "granary-style". There is no official way of naming a cp or ctf map. It's just cp or ctf.

EDIT: since you can't refer to a map with the push/attack-defend ctf map, you have to give it an other name. This is a choice, not a rule you gotta stick to.

I assume its because they push through the red defense to get to the objective, but Idk. Coming from TFC, its still just attack/defend for me

i always look at them as this:
    dustbowl/gravelpit = assault control point
granary/well = 2-way (or sometimes called 5-point... although there's no reason why you have to have 5-points for this game mode :p )

so in my mind "push ctf" is really assault (carrier)

I don't think it matters. None of the CP maps have real names, and push CTF isn't really any sort of an "official" name either. It's just a nickname that many people use, just like push CP is a nickname.

People call the CP mode linear, push, 5-CP, 2-way (well, Ezekel's example is the first time I heard that) and possibly more, so there's clearly no way to pick a name that everyone can agree with.

It's just that push cp and linear cp is the more common ones, at least what I've heard others say. Push ctf is so incredibly different from push cp, they really shouldn't share the "push" prefix.
I just don't like how we're going to spread a misleading gamemode name.

    We didn't

The founder of the gamemode (IE me) insisted that it remain CTF and nothing more. As did A Boojum Snark.

Immortal D however. is incapable of sticking to what we say, and kept on calling it CTF with something else stuck on the front/back.

It's "CTF" and only "CTF" for the same reason dustbowl is "CP" as well as well and granary being "CP". The prefix is NOT a precise description of the gamemode.

Comeing to the rest of your post. I've almost never heard push in relation to the linear CP maps (well, granary, badlands etc) one for dustbowl style maps where one team 'pushes' through the map.

Actually, in the contest rules ID calls it CTF and CTF only... hmm it seems that the "push" bit has come from you guys not us MODs. You only have yourselves to blame then! :p

By that logic; every map is a push map, since you're always pushing to win.

    Actually, you're wrong:

I've found the origin. the very first time it was called push CTF, grab your pitchforks, torches and petrol!
    http://forums.tf2maps.net/showpost.php?p=71304&postcount=6

Although I have to admit immortal's love of "push the flag" (he wanted it to be ptf..dopey bugger ) hasn't helped since he has used push a few times.
Also, ZPQ the newest mod wasn't arround when we all decided that it was CTF only so he's when he was talking to robin about any posibility of a customisable HUD feature he was calling it push-ctf D:

*runs quickly to the mod cave to make a post on our official nomenclature*

Right I've made the announcement in there, all mods should see that in the coming hours.

So. from this moment forwards. stop calling it push-CTF and start calling it CTF.

If you MUST use a prefix description use "A/D CTF" or "Invade CTF"

My biggest problem with the term "push CTF" and the idea behind it is Aurora is the only CTF map I've seen where the team actually pushes the flag. Everyone else uses nonsensical 15 second flag returns, so it really ought to be let-the-scout-run-the-flag-as-far-as-possible-before-dying-CTF, or ltsrtfafapbdctf for short.
