Why are brush faces split up so much on compile?

    So, I understand that polygon faces have to be chopped up for BSP to take effect, but whenever I turn on wireframe and look at level geometry I'm amazed by how many flat surfaces have seemingly unnecessary faces.
    Is it just the result of BSP?
