Well's Lighting

    You know those two rollup gates in front of each brewery? Somehow, valve managed to block the sunlight from going through them.

    How did they accomplish this?

    (I'd like to post a screenshot, but for some reason they all come out solid black)

    Print screen doesn't work either?

    I use the "block light" tool texture under some of my displacements to fix up some leaked light. Maybe they used that.

    I had the same problem myself. You think it may be from enabling the multi-core option? It's the only change I can think of since the last time I took screens.

    /on topic: Could they have parented a nodraw brush to the door?

    I think it's because the origin of that door is beyond the light's reach. It's a dynamic prop so it only uses entity based lighting unless there's a light cone from a light_spot near (which there isn't) so its all one shade - the ambient shade just behind the door.
    If the model's origin was in line with the closed position of the door it would appear to be lit by the sun.

    What he's saying I would think is he doesn't want that sunlight bleed that you get in that image where it's closed and the light shines through due to the lightmaps.

    btw, does it have to do with areaportals you think?

    func_brush with render set to disabled and shadows turned on is my guess.

    ah my bad, mis read zee's post, thought those were from well.
    No I highly doubt it has anything to do with area portals, it could be the func_door itself blocking the light though..

    Decompiling their maps only gave me the regular doors. I've tried that but it didn't work.

    Arena Well uses a func_brush, but that doesn't do anything either.

    I'll try the block light texture.

    'tis true about the black screenshots. Turn off multicore rendering and screenies will take just fine
