I'm getting the message: "The application failed to start because of its side-by-side configuration is incorrect......"

Any ideas in how to get it working? (I'd like to add in some more moons/planets into my map)

Perhaps a missing or corrupted Visual C++ 2005 SP1 package in your system. I often run into this problem with GCFScape after doing a fresh (re)installation of Windows. However, this shouldn't be a problem for VTFEdit as the installation seems to come with the tools VTFEdit needs. Try reinstalling Visual C++ 2005 SP1 (>x86-based OS< / >x64-based OS<). You don't need to restart the system after the installation.

Also make sure that you're using the official and latest version of VTFEdit: http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=238
