(-TN-) Adds Custom Server

    Hey everyone at TF2maps.com!

    I am the leader of the Top Notch Clan Servers and we are currently expanding our servers to a dedicated box. On this new box we are opening up a custom map server that we hope will be a close clone to Qs but more fun! If you haven't already heard of us, we run 2 servers at the moment ranked top 10 in TF2, a 24/7 Badwater/Goldrush server and a 24/7 Dustbowl server. Badwater is ranked 2 at the moment but since we are moving we will have to re-earn that rank. Our servers are located on the West Coast in San Jose/San Fran. I haven't run a custom maps server in a long time. So I was hoping I could gain some support from you guys before I open it. So far my plans are to use most or all of Qs maps from here http://theqclan.com/viewtopic.php?t=21422

    I will update this post with the server info when we get it and hope to gain some support from the map authors! Visit our site if you want to check out our current servers to see what the custom will be like. You wont be disappointed! Take our survey after too!

    If the server is without any mods or respawntime changes; it would be great if you guys could test pl_repository_b5 :)

    To be honest, Q could have better taste in customs:


    cp_redstone_b2 - Too spacious, stalematey for pubs
    cp_labor - Small, very small. Some like it though I guess...
    cp_science2 - Great once you learn it
    cp_warpath2 - Absolute shit, enjoy walking a mile from spawn, back-and-forth gameplay for many hours. Sucks.
    cp_fastlane_b1 - Uhhh there's a newer version? Everyone hates fastlane anyway, replace with cp_freight
    cp_stag - Fine
    cp_aqua - Only two stages, RED can completely rape BLU on it (close quarters), detailing and fps issues
    cp_switchback
    ctf_geothermal_b2
    cp_castle4 - Way too large, this is a scrub's map, that's only fun if you enjoy a billion scouts
    cp_wolf2_b1 - Overall not very good, balancing, detailing etc issues
    ctf_turbine_v3 - Newer version is out
    ctf_mach4 - Meh, fine I guess

    I'll write up some better choices for yall in a bit

    I agree with Mangy, some of those maps are fun, but I played [Q] alot and got bored with them.

    They did have CP_observatory a bit at the end and I enjoy that one. Science can be fun. Warpath is horrible, gameplay wise, looks wise, ... already too many servers run it, dump it quick.

    I think for me the big thing is keeping it fresh. I've really been enjoying 2fort2furious serer for this reason. The map cycle is huge, you'll play a pl, then an arena, then a cp, then a sniper, then ctf. Customs, originals...

    I'm not saying you should copy that exactly, sometimes NOT mixing it up too much is a good thing too. But don't take that old rotation and repeat it, try new maps, mix up gameplay a little. Change rotation every month or 2 months. Maybe have 10 maps, cycle 5 out one month and 5 the next. Try new maps, the newer maps are getting better all the time. Did I say try new maps yet?

    Ok, thanks for the suggestions. Name a few good new maps that are popular and we can test them out. We want to get the server off to a good start and want to keep it as full as Qs so please suggest some maps that TF2ers will enjoy and are popular.

    I heard arena_medieval_b4_v1 is a great map :p
    OK, shameless self promotion over...

    I like playing Observatory, there are a bunch of PL maps coming out (all are fun but haven't played any enough to pick a fav yet), it's hard to say what I'd put up if I started a server though.

    I think the problem is that most of the maps that were on [Q] were fun, but I played them too much. So now I just wanna play new maps.

    I think my biggest suggestion would be to run some of the more recent ones Q had like observatory, maybe science, and throw a few in between to test the waters. Deffinately 1 or 2 of the newer PL's. Maybe Hoodoo and I gotta say waste (ic's maps are fun and it has fresh gameplay). So that's a couple PL's, a couple CP's.
    at least one CTF but I'm not sure if any newer ones are out right now.
    I like arena too so that can be a fun way to mix it up. Seems like maybe a shorter time slot for arena maps is good so if the server is busy people don't sit out too many rounds too much.

    And mix up the rotation. CP, PL, Arena, CTF, CP, PL.... old, new, old...

    That way someone might not like a new arena map, but if they don't have to wait to long for that old CP they love they'll probably stick around.

    Oh yeah, ctf_aerospace has been fun the times I've played. That might be a good one to help get a custom server going.

    I actually miss ctf_impact. That was on [Q] for awhile. But that's one of those that alot of people have played and either like or don't maybe. Might be good just to throw into rotation once in awhile, but not to draw players.

    I also liked cp_japan, looks like there is a new version I haven't played.

    arena_harvest and lighthouse are nice.

    Then there's the cp map on an island with giant robot, I forgot name but I know someone here knows. Not sure when the last update was.

    There was also an arena (I think) that was on tf2 server awhile back. Then mid point opened up and you could jump down onto a rocket with a health pack. I liked that one.

    Just searched through fpsbanana a bit to see what's out there. There are so many maps I've never played. I guess that is my whole point, getting maps that have been looked over a little more light shone on them while keeping some sure favs around would be great.
    If people really just don't seem to dig a particular map then yank it.

    Im probably not going to put any arena maps in because this is going to be 32 slots. Someone was talking about a map where you have to break the door to win? I was also looking at cashworks.

    No CTF maps? I dont think warpath will be needed anymore, it was made right when the sdk came out, its too old now.

    The regs don't really like Warpath, but it's an excellent server populator, which is why we had it come first every time the server crashed/restarted.

    The CTF gametype is mostly lame, with he exception of Turbine.

    I will add it as soon as I get a grip on the best ways to keep the server full, i.e testing a good map cycle. The new servers should be up on Friday, we had a small delay but the dedicated box we are getting is worth the wait.

    And sorry for not healing you as a medic while we were test playing it the other day. I was paying too much attention to other people playing the map to play correctly. I know you were mad at me. I still feel bad about it...:(

    You're thinking of tc_meridian, right?

    With warpath2 only on when the server starts. I think cashworks is the biggest map I want to have as far as file size. Im also looking at putting lazytown nitetime on but its not on fpsbanana or here. Perhaps someone wants to add it? I will probably go on another server and get it. Comments?

    We may just make it a PL rotation as that may be a little more specific and popular. Plus our #1 server is payload. The #1 server spot on TF2 is up for grabs though until ours comes back! lol.
