The 2015 Summer 72hr Mapping Contest! Announcement Thread | Upload Thread | Voting Phase One | Voting Phase Two | Results Thread July 31st @ 7PM GMT to August 3rd @ 7PM GMT Time converter at worldtimebuddy.comTime converter at worldtimebuddy.com INTRODUCTIONIt's time to cancel plans, draw the shades, and get yourself a bunch of your caffeinated beverage of choice, because the 8th semi-annual 72hr contest is upon us again! This time we're going back to basics - no themes, no springboarding into major contests. Get creative and make whatever you want! RULES Respect the time limit! The map you submit to the contest may not be started before the contest begins. See the FAQ below for clarification. You may create sketches of your map before the start of the contest. You may not use any elements from old maps. Simple prefabs, such as stairs, prop sets, and entity setups are allowed. If you're unsure, ask. You are allowed to use A Boojum Snark's resource library and any other publicly available resources. Make sure you credit them when you submit your map! You are also allowed to use Fr0z3n's Map Start-up Prefab. Custom content is allowed, but only if you make it yourself, or if the content is publicly available before the start of the contest. Check this flowchart if you're unsure. Except for MvM, any gamemode (custom or official) is allowed. Your final entry must be submitted before the 72hrs run out. There is a very slight grace period, but don't try to abuse it. Format your map's filename so that it reads as "gamemode_mapname_72". Using version suffixes is allowed as well. koth_example_72_a3, cp_buddha_72, and csf_hugs_72_v4 are all great examples. DO NOT USE CAPITAL LETTERS OR SPECIAL CHARACTERS (. , $ % &, etc) IN YOUR FILE NAME! There's no limit on filesize. Maps must be able to spawn at least 24 players (12 per team). Your map must including lighting, however basic. Fullbright maps will be disqualified. No collaborations are allowed! You may submit a maximum of two maps, although it's recommended that you only submit one. See the FAQ for more details. You are allowed to test your map as many times as you wish during the 72hrs. There will be impromptus hosted by staff/members throughout the 72hr time period. If you have the time to have your map tested, it is HIGHLY recommended that you test it. Your entry must run on TF2Maps.net Servers. It's recommended that you run your map in an impromptu test during the contest just to make sure! Failure to adhere to these rules may result in disqualification. If in doubt, ask. FAQ Spoiler What can I do before the contest starts? You can: Create custom content (materials, models, sounds, etc.) for your own personal use. Create simple prefabs like stairs and doors that could be re-used in other maps. Create entity setups like doors and objective systems that could be re-used in other maps. You cannot: Create custom content (materials, models, sounds, etc.) for someone else to use without releasing the content publicly. Create prefabs that would become a part of your layout in a significant manner; for example, an entire building. How am I allowed to plan my map? You can use whatever method you're comfortable with to plan your map, including Hammer. However, if you do use Hammer, your layout brushwork must be constructed entirely within the 72 hour period of the contest. This means starting a new .vmf, and no copy/pasting is allowed (aside from stuff that could be considered a prefab according to the guidelines above). Can I participate more than once? Yes! As long as you only submit two maps, you can participate in both an alternate weekend and during the main time. However, you may not win prizes twice. Additionally, in the event that the voting period has a finalist pool, only your best map will be allowed in, even if both qualify. Can I modify my map after the contest? Not until your map is out of the running. If your map is still a contender for winning any prizes, you can't release any new versions of your map. However, as soon as your map is eliminated from the running, or the contest voting concludes altogether, you can update. If you discover your map has a game-breaking bug after you submit it, and you'd like to fix that bug, let me know! If your map cannot actually be played as intended, then you can fix that - but nothing else. Send me the fixed version in a private message and I'll edit your upload thread post for you. ALTERNATE TIMES Is this weekend impossible to make for you? No problem! You can opt to do this contest on either of the two weekends before the official one (July 17-20 or 24-27), at the starting/ending times of 8PM GMT. The only downside is that you might not get to playtest your map as much as you'd like. To opt in, send me a message, and we'll sort it out from there. I've been looking forward to this for weeks. Can't wait to get started. 64 days is going to eat me alive.
Summer 72 Hour mapping contest? July 31st? Um, I'm pretty sure that's the end of summer, unless I'm getting my dates confused. Should we call it End-of-Summer Mapping Get-to-Gether?
If I publicly release my jumppad prefab, will they be allowed? Edit: Can we please have a HDR enabled rule or something? I really want to make a showcase video and it's always a hassle because they wont load in SFM. Even if you just ask people to tell me the parameters they used in the LDR compile so I can at least recompile it myself. Edit 2: Also mumble again this year?
Eh, whenever I try to use HDR I get nothing but an endless nightmare of errors from my friends. Always works for me, never for them. I'd follow the rules if that was one, but I always get issues with it personally.
I can add a "If you want your map in the showcase video, do this" clause. What do you want it to say?
I've already got the time off requested at work. I'll be streaming the whole weekend again. I'm leaning towards making a much smaller map but fully detailing it this time rather than the 3 stage monstrosity I tried last. http://www.twitch.tv/ueakcrash
If you can't make the scheduled weekend for the contest, don't despair! I've added a clause to the main post explaining how you can opt in for an alternative 72hr period to make your map.
To make things easier for the 72hr mapping showcase, please do the following Compile the map with HDR When posting your map, Post the paramaters you used for lighting e.g -StaticPropPolys -Staticproplighting Post a version of the map with HDR within 1 week of the deadline If you do not wish to be in the showcase, you must opt-out in the post to the upload thread, if you do not opt out I will assume you are fine with the map being in the showcase AND being recompiled for SFM (which will not be released publicly) If your maps does not have any of the things listed and you haven't opted out, the map will be recompiled with the following parameters for SFM: Staticproppolys, TextureShadows, Staticproplighting, HDR (It will not be released publicly)
I should be able to participate in the contest From July 24th-27th. I also hope to stream on Twitch during that time, but no promises (here's my profile).
Most likely going to be streaming here: http://www.twitch.tv/flytnn Currently either going to be making a symmetrical attack/defend map (like this one) or something play-about-y with CTF.
Probably going to try something a little less crazy than I did in the winter 72 hour. Always love these contests. I'll be sure to be streaming it: http://www.twitch.tv/megapiemanphd
Good luck to everyone participating, I've picked up a number of games on Steam over the past few months I'm going to donate as prizes, I'll be sending them all over to Frozen when the 30 day trade restriction expires on everything.
i'm in. I will most likely be making the A/D map I have been drawing up. Taking insperation from cp_badlands, pl_upward and cp_gravelpit I hope it's at least have decent. Not sure how easy to geometry would be to make though.. please do
