So I am attempting to make a spiral ramp. Sorta like so: Problem is, when I make it with the vertex editor I get invalid solids. Anyone have any idea how I could go about making this? To explain the process I made before: Made a 180 degree arch with 16 sides. Took vertexes from one side and shifted them up 14 units. Did the same with the next one, etc etc, until it was a sloped spiral. However, they are all invalid solids.
Can be done with triangles if you're not planning on displacing.. here's a good tutorial: http://www.interlopers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=31415 .. You can also do a ramp with displacements.. check out Twister: http://www.users.on.net/~imperialcarp/Twister/Twister.html
careful with that, adding a step means its gonna be a bitch to playerclip (i've tried once, I failed). anyway, that still doesn't make a ramp but you could try vertex editing each step... if you can be bothered...
Vertex editing the steps like that is basically exactly what I did. Ended up with invalid solids. I think I'll try displacements.
if you're going with displacements, try this http://www.violator.eclipse.co.uk/disped/ But, the arch tool should be able to do this.
Actually, I remember comments on a spiral staircase I made once. People didn't like franticly flicking the mouse round to see where they where going. So be sure that the spiral you do is not too long, otherwise people will get bored using it.
If you're feeling really enthusiastic, you can follow all the vertexes with a displacements and there will be no warping of the texture whatsoever (it will be perfectly smooth and round) but keep in mind that that method is time consuming. It took me half a day to make a curve, let alone an elevating curve.
