Okay, so I was busy constructing a spiral-shaped ramp when I did a routine "check for problems" and apparently all of the brushes I used to construct it were invalid. The process used to make them (creating a spiral staircase using the arch tool, then vertex-editing the steps into a ramp shape) resulted in a concave-shaped face, which obviously isn't allowed in hammer. Choosing to "fix" it resulted in it deforming in a most undesirable way.

So, short of using displacements or making an actual model, how do I make a spiral ramp using brushes that Hammer won't freak out over?

You need to cut them in half diagonally. Their top and bottom faces are being bent due to the vertex editing.

A old hammer trick that was used before displacments (IE, goldsrc), was to make many triangles, which can never be an invalid brush, and manipulate the vertexes, to simulate rocky terrain.

tl;dr, cut them into triangles
