I've used 3ds max a bunch of times to model and texture props. However, I've never used it to bake shadows into a texture. Right now I'm trying to do it, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it to work right. Can someone walk me through this?

I've got a model broken up into multiple meshes, with separate diffuse textures applied.

My first problem:

1. When I select all the meshes and do "render to texture," I get half a dozen seperate textures rendered, one for each mesh.
2. If I attach all the meshes together, it won't keep the same textures applied to each part nomatter what I try.

My second problem:
When I do render to texture, it unwraps some of the UVs into absurdly tiny bits, and squashes some of the long UVs even though there is room to spare on the texture.

Gah, someone help me, I'm going crazy!

Well what I do is combine them into one mesh.

And when it renders them to texture the first time there should be a place where you can load a UVW file
