While I'm not too sure if I'm understanding your questions completely, I would bet that you want to change some of the settings in your light_environment.
It has a "pitch" value which basically determines what direction the light is coming from, which is how you change the angle and size of shadows.
There was also this handy tutorial about sunspread angles on the light_environment for how shadows look as well. Might be useful.
