I'm creating a map which is based on a map from COD4, I dont want players to immediatley know that this is a "remake" I will be changing textures and models and stuff but is there any other ways to stop people knowing immediatley by looking at it etc.

This is the map im basing it on

    looks like a boat
so...ppl will probably just think it's a boat map, not a cod map :)

If you do base it on that map let us go into the innards of the ship like in the single player campaign :)

also, open it up a bit, as that map usually tends to be grenade spam in COD

If I didn't know any better, I'd probably think that's the actual level.

Because it is. Or do you mean that it's the one he's making?

i think you should look at dust tribute. the guy who made that map did a great job of remaking dust from CS but making it look totally unrecognizable at first (to me at least :D)

I already have Ideas of how to stop the nade spam, probably by making some containers higher etc. and since I am doing this map from any google images (I traded the game in) if you have any good reference pics for the inside would be good.

I think thats just because he's in the dev stages, when I am adding texture I want this to be a blu style boat so some textures could seem very similar.

The first step would be to NOT point out that you're making a remake.

But if you are making a remake why are you trying to hide it? So people will think it's original?

No, If I wanted to play a COD map, I'd play COD. So I am trying to keep the same layout/gameplay style this map has, along with similar textures as it will be a blu boat. I just wanted to see if anyone had tips or things so it doesnt make it blatantly obvious its based on that map - if ya see what I mean. I don't want people coming in or looking at screenshots and going immediatley "Wetworks from COD4..." or something of the sort.

EDIT: Also many people disliked this map because of nade spam/openness so I'm going to try and combat the issues (sniper, demo, soldier and engy may be overpowered in the original)

Still you said the same thing.

    ' I'm gonna remake a COD map but don't want people to think it's a remake. '

Not trying to argue mind you, but explain how it's different.

    There are 2 ways.
1: Don't tell anyone, hope they don't recognize the similarities. You already told us so the cat's out of the bag, I never played COD so I would've never known.

    2: Don't make a remake.

Any map made in TF2 with TF2 resources is gonna look different. But if it's the same idea, same gameplay, same layout it's a remake.

I understand what you are saying, its a remake I'd like to think there is a way for me to stop die hard COD4 fans (like myself) from immediatley knowing meh I suppose I should just tweak things so they seem different but dont affect gameplay too much. I guess you are right about teh second option, I saw potential and decided to use it. Thanks for your advice though ;)

IMO you should't make a remake, look at the map to see how it's done then create an entirly new layout based on that map. So you have the same play style and theme but a new and layout that plays good for tf2.
I also think making a remake is boring, and it might take you longer because you have to look at your reference a lot.

well, if it's a remake you limit yourself a lot by having to do things the same. A tribute on the other hand (shameless plug), gives you a lot more creative license. It's perfectly acceptable to be inspired by something, or to port things over to different platforms.

    As you've pointed out yourself:
It's going to be a different map that inspired by wetworks (that's the name right?) - and there's nothing wrong with that. Whether you mention that in the objective text is completely up to you. I could have named dustribute "monkeydance" and some people would have noticed the similarity in layout to dust anyway...just as others don't notice even with dust in the name.

I guess my main point is that don't call it a remake/don't make a remake...it's too limiting...just use the map as inspiration for your own (and imo it's nice to credit the original author somewhere when you do).
