Howdy guys! At the moment I'm working on my map's cubemaps, and on static props it's almost perfect, but the reflections on the sniper's scope are terrible. I checked out cp_badlands, and saw that there are no reflections on the scope, which is a smart move, but how do I do that? If I can't do that, how can I fix the glitchy, jumpy reflections? Thanks!

You would need to edit and replace the material used by each model. This is not a good idea.

Sooo, what would be a decent solution? Using less/more cubemaps? Or just simply not care about it and hope that it won't ruin the feeling?

I'm not sure what your map is looking like, how you are doing things, or why you think they aren't there on badlands, but the scope will have reflections on all maps unless you simply turn off specular rendering on your client.

I would say the fault is with your map being ugly or cubemap placement being poor. Got any pictures of the offending reflections?

Here's an album of a few examples. On the first two pictures the things seen in the reflection of the scope are things that are a level above or below. Can these only be fixed by using more cubemaps?

Yes, because the game will use whatever cubemap the player is closest to for reflections. There is a balance to it though.. adding too many cubemaps will inflate the size of your map dramatically.

In practice it doesn't matter too much if the reflection is accurate, people almost never study them that closely.

There are some cases where you can have cubemaps on a map and there's no reflection on the sniper scope but I've never really figured out why that is.

So shall I just leave it as it is now?

It's up to you, you're the map maker.

If you don't like how it looks, fix it. If you don't care, leave it as is. If someone complains that it looks bad you can revisit later.

Re: Badlands, are you sure you're not just having the bug where it disables all reflections on stock maps? Because sometimes things can go wrong when you build your own map's cubemaps and it can make that happen, for some reason. Easiest way to check would be to go near a control point prop and walk around and see if you can see reflections that move.
