As community contributors (most of us anyway), I think I should ask you guys something. If Valve started adding more community created maps/items/what-have-you, more often, would it be detrimental? One one hand, more community created stuff would be nice, as there are some amazing items in the workshop, and some stunning maps on this site alone. This might force some more life into the community and create more content as a result. On the other, this may cheapen the experience of having something added to the game officially. It may open the door to more poorly though-out maps and items as well, and god knows we don't need any more of that. Discuss.
I don't think they could realistically add so much stuff that a decline in the awesomeness of having an item go official would happen. LOTS of items are being contributed after all, and valve has to keep the game at a somewhat reasonable size. What i'm more concerned about is how valve seem to favor poor promo items over high-quality community items. A lot of the promo items are butt-ugly, and i'm still drooling over some community items from time to time.
I can't argue with that. The only promo item that I wear is the "Person in the Iron Mask" for the Pyro (and that's because the Firemen were my favorite enemies in Bioshock Infinite). Still I wonder how: This: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=119292191 This: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=118605516 This: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=126675632 And this: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=121002699 Haven't been added. Though a comment on the "Hat of all Trades" made me laugh: Brave Sir Robin Feb 18, 2013 @ 8:17pm Looks nice Well made Fits the class well Fits the game's artstyle Not obnoxious looking Doesn't look like it would cause obvious clipping Sorry, pal. There's no way Valve is going to add this.
