Question about sign textures

I'm trying to enhance my map by using signs but I need to help direct the game play - people are getting lost.

I was looking at doing this via door type signs - open-close - and having an arrow sign on the door.

If I have a brush and put a sign texture on one of the faces, it they appears transparent on that face. Is this normal? It might look normal in-game but the transparency is making it hard in the map making steps. Any ideas?

It is normal. You can go with a sign textured face, that will appear only if the brush is active. When you're playing with multiples faces at the same place in the editor, you'll end up with depth fighting, but there is not helping it, I guess. Only remember what you did put in there, and use visgroups to manage them efficiently.
