    Do something different from the norm. Instead of making another koth, or single stage payload, or 5cp, make sd, or a/d ctf, or steel-style cp. After you choose a gamemode, use an interesting theme, like construction, or jungle, or autumn. This is usually my thought process when I want ideas. As for layout, it helps me to just play tf2. But while I'm doing it, pay attention to what you like, what you dislike, how certain things work, et cetera, then incorporate those things into your map.

    I've started to see some space based maps - moonbase and losthorizon (my recent one) maybe if we do more of these valve will actually complete their models, etc. Plus there's a lot you can do outside of the box with a space theme - I put in low grav and teleporters for extra fun - go knock yourself.

    I'd say arctic, but with the classic tf2 spytech twist to it, featuring a front area that looks like a normal building, the initial interior looking normal, but all of it is concealing a hidden high tech base!

    Sounds like a Dr. Who tardis - have players spawn in one part of the map seeing the outside of it when they walk in they teleport into the main base.

    The bases in Well are actually bigger on the inside; they accomplished it by hiding the biggest room behind the skybox brushes and making sure there are enough twists in the hallways that it never renders from outside.

    A plr map, like a normal one, but the bombs go automatically to the end, like overtime on nightfall.
    You can push the bomb to go faster, or block the enemy bomb and stop it.
    Because some plr maps never ends...
    (*cough* Like Hightower *cough*)

    Big Foggy map where ya can't see anything near ya, and ya have to guess where the enemies are at! :T

    A 5cp map that is mirrored over the center, rather than rotational symmetry! I've never seen one.

    Take a look at the Orphaned maps. People who get bored or lose hope on their maps dump them there

    I wish people did more with the Egypt theme. Oasis' are restricting by design but give an interesting challenge. Clever use of height variance could make it work.

    I'm trying to get a koth & arena map going with that theme in mind.
