    Hi all,

I'm trying to add a custom texture to my tf2 map using [ame="http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=838"]Hawk's tutorial[/ame]. Unfortunately, I can't find my custom texture at the Texture Browser.

    Here is what I did:

    1. Installed the VTF Format Plug-In for Photoshop.

    2. Scribbled something on Photoshop with these settings:
    512*512 pixels
    300 pixels/inch
    RGB Color 8 bit
    White background

    3. Saved as VTF with these settings:
    Format: DXT1
    Mipmap Filter: Box
    Sharpen Filter: Sharpen Soft
    Mipmaps: Checked
    Thumbnail: Checked
    Flags: None Checked

    4. Placed the vtf. file at:
    C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\[My steam username]\sourcesdk_content\tf\materialsrc

    ALSO TRIED:

    C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\[My steam username]\team fortress 2\tf\materials

    5. Restarted Hammer and opened up my saved project.

    6. Looked for my custom texture in the Texture Browser and didn't find it there.

I promise to give a virtual cookie to the one who will help me :)

vmf? I think you mean VMT that points to the vtf, right?

You need a VMT. This goes in the same place as your material.

For example, a texture in /tf/materials would need a relevant VMT in the same folder. So you would have mytexture.vtf and mytexture.vmt in the same folder.

    Here's an example VMT.

    Code:
    "LightmappedGeneric"
    {
    	"$basetexture" "mycustomfolder/mytexture"
    }

Simply copy and paste that into Notepad, Save it making sure you set 'Save Type As' to 'all' and name your file 'mytexture.vmt'.

Really crap number of one liners in this thread.

Rule of thumb: If your post is only one sentence long, its too short and you haven't explained yourself well enough.
If someone comes in asking for help and has obviously never done something before don't just say "You need xxx" Say "You need xxx because of xxx you need to put it here xxx, if that still doesnt work you should try and consider xxx, if all else fails post what you've got here and I'll take a closer look at what you're doing"

See how the latter one is 1000% more helpful, friendly and will be able to aid anyone who simply happens to be searching over google or lurking in the forums for help instead of actively posting?

One other thing, Once you've found your solution don't just leave it as "nvm found it" as so many forum goers do, actually post the solution so that people can see what you did.

Anyhow. I've made my point, and Psy's post is what you need to get a material working.

(Don't mind me being a grave digger.)

I love how you show up and complain about people who don't elaborate on their advice, and yet you offer absolutely no advice whatsoever.

Also, I'm having similar problems to the thread creator (this was the first thing that came up in google.) Except I'm not working on TF2, and the textures are already in the map. I just can't get them to show up in hammer. :(

Way to bump a fully one year old thread with an insult. If you had made a new thread, or just bumped this one with your problem, I would try to help you. But by making an obnoxious necro, it really makes me want to not.

Let me also explain what is wrong with your question:
-This is TF2maps.net, we work on TF2
-The textures are already in the map? Wut?
-They dont show up in hammer, but are in the map? Wut?
