Hi! I'm very new to anything to do with mapping so this is probably a super easy question but I've been googling up and can't seem to find an answer for this:

With maps, I notice that many have a smaller area with little mini-props which are displayed surrounding the main map as somewhat of a skybox.

My questions are; what is this called, how do I make one and what's any other important info regarding it?

    They're called 3D Skyboxes.
Here's a link to their page on the source wiki: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/3D_Skybox
There are instructions there for how to create one, but it's a bit technical. Just searching for 3D Skybox tutorials will also help you out.

Once you get the hang of it, they're pretty straightforward to make.

3D Skyboxes can really help out a map. They're always interesting to observe and make, but can sometimes be tricky to scale. Be sure to check out this guide by @Freyja. It describes the process of creating a 3D Skybox in-depth.
