Looking for small maps (filesize) for my Custom Maps server

    Hi all,

I've been running my own server for a few weeks now that has been running my first few maps aswell as my girlfriends first map, and a friends first map. Lots of 1st maps! However, they have all been very popular once we can get some people to get it started :D

Despite this, there isn't enough variety until I can complete some more maps so I have decided to open up the server to the wider-worlds custom maps.
The catch however is that I only want quick downloads, ours maps are all 5-8MB, which makes sense for their small size and simplicity.

So, if anybody can recommend my any maps that are below 15MB (or <40MB uncompressed) that would be much appreciated.

    Other requirements:
    • Maps not designed for large numbers, my server is 18 slots, but is usually sat around 10-12 players
    • Preferably finished maps. Near finish is ok, but would rather not have maps that are getting regular updates and still have unfinished chunks

I know this is a bit picky but hopefully you guys have something to recommend for my server!

    Thanks

    EDIT: Server IP - 85.234.148.92:27015

I would just like to add that thanks to the suggestion and discovery of compressed map downloads in-game, I would welcome <15MB compressed maps as well (which should allow up to about 30MB maps). This should definitely allow more maps to fit the criteria.

duel_duel2 is one of the greatest simple maps. It's been around since almost when TF2 came out, (as far as I'm told, it was made with difficulty before the public SourceSDK supported TF2 fully). It's small, finished, nicely detailed for its size, and can be very fun with the right people. It doesn't have a set gametype though.

Not many fully finished maps I know of are under 15 mb. A fully lit, HDR map is quite large. I suggest looking through FPSbanana in the deathmatch/duel category as those are usually quite simple.

If memory serves, PL_Swiftwater would probably fit those criteria. Forget exactly *how* big the final version was compressed, but it was designed to be a tiny/fast download, hence the "swift" part of the name.

koth_courtyard It's nearing completion now, and the .bsp is currently 13mb uncompressed.

There are currently a few fps issues but they will be fixed -hopefully- in the next version

Thank you for the suggestions, though pl_swiftwater and KoTH Lighthouse are both about 22MB uncompressed. BSP's compress VERY well, so filesize cant really be judged when compressed.

If he sets the server up properly people will only have to download the BZ2 where it will then be unpacked into the client's maps folder.

For the time being you can check out koth_geese_tower_b1 (it's under 20mb iirc) as I'd be needing more additional feedback and at least it's not the worst map out there. You can check out the thread here: http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?ltr=G&t=8845

Edit: Oh, and if you .bz2 it the file size will decrease by quite a lot. Like Psy, I recommend .bz2-ing it before uploading maps to your server. TF2 will unpack the bz2 after downloading.

So I can just add it to an archive off the same name, with that particular compress type/extension and upload to same place as my normal URL maps and it works?

Well...the best way to do it would be to download 7zip http://www.7-zip.org/download.html archive it to bz2 format. That would give you the compressed file you need.

After that the best method is to have a web redirect that all your downloaded files are placed in so people downloading the maps don't have to wait for the horrible server trickle down effect.

In the case you need to know how to set the redirect up you add the following line to your server.cfg
    sv_downloadurl "http://customgamers.org/tf/"
in this case all the bz2 files would be placed in "http://customgamers.org/tf/maps", you don't add the maps parts to the download url as it automatically detects it

provided you didn't want to use a web redirect, I would assume you just add the bz2s to the same place you add your maps, though you would need both the map and the compressed file

Thank you for the walkthrough, despite already running it that way just not compressed :)
I just wasnt sure if any additional settings needed to be set up to use the compresssed version or if it needed to be named in a particular way :)

    Thanks again

Any chance of getting the server ip? I love playing custom maps that play well, or at least have a decent amount of a players without being overfilled.

    Sure, its 85.234.148.92:27015

Most of the week its completely empty, but once 3-4 of us join that's usually enough to kick-start it and usually gets to around 10-12, occasionally more.

I have set up a Steam Group for the server, so that people can gather together and populate it, as well as to enable me to schedule events which I usually do once or twice a week, such as tomorrow at 2pm UK time.

There is a map called 2base, with variants for cp, pl and ctf. Please bare in mind 2base was my first map for ANY game, and the map and modes were for experimentation. Despise this however, all my friends enjoy it, and so do all guests who have commented.
Asylum is my girlfriends 1st map as well, and if loaded up there's also ctf_Burbs which is one of my best friends 1st map.
Sometime soon my 2nd map will be up :)

Ok, joined the group and added server to favs. And it just so happened that courtyard was on it at that time xD

I look forward to playing these maps.
