As a wrangler engie, I wouldn't say it's that overpowered.
But, getting back on topic, I would say a lot of things have detracted from the "seriousness" of the game. Whether or not this is exactly unattractive I would debate.
I mean, sure, gameplay may be more about reaction now, just like every other shooter, but under most circumstances, I still come back to this game. Personally, I still find it to be one of the most balanced games out there regardless, and maybe my four years of playing are merely deceiving me, but even things like the newer items and increase in players haven't detracted from my experience. If you have a good, varied team behind you who knows how to counter the enemy, the game is still serving its purpose.
