Hi all! I am a bit old compared to the average presentations our there... to give you an idea, I have basics level design skills acquired when I used to create maps for Duke Nukem 3D and Doom 2 in Build... I even made my dorm in Worldcraft as HL1 deathmatch (good times ^^).

After a slight gap in years, the itch is there again... I've been through many posts and the diversity and precision of the articles is quite impressive! I will have to re-learn everything but some of you really spend some time writing for the benefit of others and I'm really glad to them (thanks button is a great feature by the way).

I scoured the forums for a while and decided to drop the luggage and unpack here.I'm not sure yet what would be a good map to start with, I guess I'll just play with Hammer and look back into 3DS until things make sense... see you around!

Hey welcome to the forums! Yeah TF2maps is pretty good in my opinion too for their guides and things.

A good map to start with is something small, for instance King of the Hill, or Arena. With these it doesn't take too long to get a good layout together, and the amount of research you need to do to create the basic geometry isn't a lot. Dr. Spud made a good post about designing basic map layouts just the other day in fact.

Also if you want you can join our steam group chat where we're occasionally on topic, but always at least useful for help and stuff.

Thanks! I'm definitely going to dismantle the existing maps and play Frankenstein with them until it breaks! Not sure about the Steam chat as I'm in GMT+8, but if you guys have insomnia... why not?

We have members from the US, EU, Australia, and maybe a few other areas. You shouldn't have to worry about finding a crowd to hang out with.

    Duke Nukem 3d Mappers represeeeent!

Not that I made anything of value in it, but it was the first advanced level editor I really dove into.

    Welcome to the community!

@ Idolon: I hope so, though Australia is already few hours away... but I think I'll try to get my hands dirty before meddling in the crowd

@ Crash: Thanks! Same here, I don't think I would even try to dig them out... I remember adding lights and shadows in 3D environments was like magic at the time, though it had to be made by repetitively clicking on all the areas until they get the same shade ^^
