Well here's what I say to this, if you have the balls to come here and register and make a thread and say your thinking of making a map you've already made the decision...you're here so you might as well do it and if it doesn't turn out to be your cup-of-tea then no one can say you didn't try. It's what i did, i even put one of my school classes in college on the line for map making. I said "yes I want to learn to make a map, even if I may not be able to do it and fall flat on my face, i'm gonna try this." So i sat down and in 11 weeks came up with PL_Oversea, mind you it's loaded with bugs and newbie mistakes but that was the key to opening the first intimidation blockade that i think stops a lot of new mappers. So i say, if you got yourself this far to making a thread just to ask if you should or shouldn't, DO IT Ii say and for the love of god have fun with it, don't make it feel like a chore.

thx for the posts, i know my post probably sounds a bit stupid, and also i didnt do too well in school just because of gaming, never mind mapping AND gaming lol! also another stupid thing i did.

so i guess in a way, i was asking my self if its worth the time, and if people will actually play the map and if they dont does it have any point?

but 11 weeks? you learnt to use hammer and a made a map in such short time?

maybe for my first map ill have a go at something fun.

with fun being the keyword, it would be nice to open hammer and make something pro like the valve maps but i think that will be unlikely.

so dont expect too much but ill see what happens.

I think, if you have the interest in making maps for TF2, that you should at least give it a try.

I find it really fun, but have yet to create anything worthy of a public release.

As with anything like this, prepare to either hate it... or get totally immersed.

basic rule is that don't release your first map :p learn your skills with that and after you feel you've learned some techniques, start some small map, like koth, arena etc :) remember, don't rush into things, slowly but steadily. AND READ TUTORIALS :D.

Artesia is correct, always follow that video's tips. They are most useful...

That video should be destroyed. Everytime someone watches that video, a baby spontaniously combusts.

    Also, welcome.

thanks to everyone, you really conviced me to start something in hammer, although that tutorial im assuming is supposed to be how not to map :D

if i have any newbie questions (ill probably have loads) is it ok to collect them up and post them in one thread, im learning for my self as well but sometimes its easier to ask some pros.

and any ideas on how to go about mapping would be great, for example should i just firstly design on paper then see what i can make in hammer, and maybe some good practices in hammer to make map mapking as easy and fast as possible, after all, playing maps is just as important as making them :p

btw i read everywhere carving is bad, why doesnt valve just remove that tool :D

If you have questions, the search function is very much the first friend to turn to ;)

My advice is to start with a King Of The Hill (KOTH) or Arena map, simply because they're smaller and involve less work if you do them symmetrically so both sides are similar.
