Under the Tools tab in Steam, download the Source SDK. From there you can create maps using the Hammer map-making program.

The Valve Developer Wiki can help you with your starting steps on how to use it, so take a read through each article under Getting Started: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Category:Hammer

Furthermore, you can find more information on how to create maps for Team Fortress 2, with different game modes and objectives for people to play, including creating spawn rooms and such: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Team_Fortress_2_Level_Creation

Happy mapping! We look forward to seeing what you create :)

I just want to point out I usually avoid pointing brand new people to it. There is a lot there they won't need or understand until they have the basics down, and some of it is things they should learn to do themselves before they have something to do it for them.

Well, it was something I used as soon as I started. It feels "right".
At least for me.
I learned a bit of entities by simply looking at the gamemode guide.
It was really helpful.

I think that having proper entity icons is something everyone should have.

Henke is right about the icons (I'd also say the FGD edits are worthwhile), but yes, you should learn things yourself and not use the pack right away for other things, like doors or resupply cabinets.

I didn't even remember the pack had those prefabs. So, yeah, get it for the icons and prop packs, and to look over the entity setups in the gamemode samples, but build your own map from scratch.

The only thing I use the pack for it the gamemode setups. I tried again and again but I can never get my own going so I just use the ones in that pack now.

For anything else, make it yourself. Doors and stuff aren't too hard. There are tutorials (I really suggest the valve developer community pages) to help you out.

But doing it yourself is the way to learn to use the gamemode setups. That said, it's sometimes hard to test if a gamemode is working without players on both teams, and it's not fun to find out it doesn't work during a gameday.

Oh trust me. I tried 6 times. I followed the developer recourse and some other tutorials online but to no avail. On my next map I will try again though.

That's what you have bots for.
