The D!HCDH? Community Presents... Project Source Studio

Prepare for your minds to be blown. We are about to revolutionize mapping by making it more accessible.

    www.dhcdh.com

Now keep in mind this is intended for people who are new to mapping who have great ideas and wanna make maps. We are making it so you cannot do everything you could do in Source SDK in Source Studios, that way people are encourage to eventually learn SDK, and my group D!HCDH? are willing to help the people that want to learn. Think of Source Studios as a gateway for to be mappers.

You may also be wondering, well what the hell. I already know how to use SDK perfectly fine.

Well whats neat about PSS is that, lets say that you have a general idea for a really cool map. Instead of launching SDK and spending 45 minutes just to get a basic layout down. You can do that on Source Studios in 10 minutes. Then since it saves it on our servers cloud, you can access that map anywhere, and continue to edit and work on it on SDK when you have time to commit to the map.

Hope you guys enjoy, feedback and constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

There's a reason why mapping isn't 'easy' as you are intending to make it. People who are interested in learning this skill should by no means ever be told that it's easy. That is a mistake. While people may save time by skipping the learning process, the more advanced and essential features that can't be made with prefabs and 'drag and drop' functions will never be learned. Hammer might be years older and more primitive than other advanced level design softwares, but boiling it down like you're doing is not something that would improve the quality of it. Call me skeptical.

It usually takes me 5-15 minutes to get a good layout going in hammer. How could this make that any faster?

I'm just interested in seeing what the actual tool looks like. Although, personally, I'd prefer the current hammer over the 'simple drag and drop' system anyday even if it is just for the base layout, it's just another medium you'll have to muck about with.

Also I like how the two featured community maps on the main page are Watchtower and Fastlane.

Is this even Valve approved? I'm confused with the Copyrights your tossing up...

Also, Youtube and time and actually doing mapping. I can't think of how many "{Practice" maps I made before I released my first map, and it still sucked...

EDIT: Just read through the site. I don't like it. Browser based, (though the cloud idea is a tad nice, but steam does that for me anyways with the assistance of dropbox). "Easy" to use... You may make it an 'interface' but that doesn't prevent the need to learn about game balance and such. Sounds like this will lead to a lot of prop-spam maps.

Our service is non-commercial, and for those who aren't making a profit Valve allows free modification of the Source Engine.

If Valve have an issue, we'd be more than happy to discuss with them.

How is this going to speed up my blocking by 4 times or more? Is this tool going to use a subtraction-based mapping paradigm?

Thanks, I'm not with Valve nor do I have an issue with it, I'm just confused on the Legal Mumbo Jumbo.

    ENTIRE TEAM, IS BABIES!

sounds like your trying to create the Far Cry map editor, which is fun but you can't really do much with it as compared to the Unreal or Source Development Kit. It will be good to get quick ideas down but as far as in depth mapping, the farthest it could get is an orange map.

Whatever arguments one could make about this making mapping too accessible, I think it's very interesting from a technical point of view. I'd love to see what becomes of this project!

The last mapping site i was on (for Portal) had a common bugaboo called PO_edit_15. This allowed you to create portal levels through "Drag and drop". Everyone hated it. While i admit i havent used yours, the same reasons apply.

The relative complexity of hammer to newbies is, for me, a sort of test. If you can pass the test of learning how to create and edit brushes and props, you can carry on: if not, you wont. By needing an amount of effort to be put into the basics, that shows you're willing to go on and learn the more complex bits.

The main thing that PO_edit_15 proved was that, remove this "Effort Filter" and you get, largely, maps of lower quality, simply because the people making them havent passed the trial by fire of learning the engine. The vast majority of PO_edit_15 maps were terrible, above and beyond the limitations of the program. People with truly great ideas tend to have the drive to break through the boring bits to get to the fun bits. Ignore the boring bits, and the quality produced inevitably degrades.

This is the reason that all the VDC tutorials dont start and end with "Get ABS's mapping pack". You dont train people to be good by doing bits for them.

Technologically, it is a fantastic acheivement. I just think its ideology is flawed.
