So, I'm just wondering what might be effecting how poorly hammer performs on my computer. Heres whats wrong:

First is really the SDK. It takes forever to launch after clicking it in the steam list, and I'm talking 3-5 minutes. If I have music or something running, you can hear it lag out like mad. It has been this why since I started working with the the SDK. However, I have a shity laptop that launches it easily. Ideas?

The second is the big one right now. This has been going on since I upgraded my graphics card (though I've only used hammer once since then). Basically, whenever I'm using the 3D view its very laggy. This makes it difficult, and more importantly, frustrating to deal with, so I don't have the patience reburied to just sit down and map. Thoughts?

Anyways, hopefully someone knows of something to fix my issues. Thanks for the help :)

I had similar issues on my old computer. The culprit is usually the physical amount of ram you have. Unfortunately, diverting video memory doesn't have a noticeable impact. What are your specs? Before launching the sdk, bring up the processes window and shut down all non-essentials; internet, music stuff, ims, even the main steam app window if need be. Odds are though, you'll just have to invest in a couple large memory sticks. Good luck m8 :)

I'm too lazy to type, so I'm copying what steam says :)

I got a major boost in hammer performance especially in big maps when I upgraded from 1gb ram to 3gb ram.
The entire map gets loaded into ram, I dont think your video card has much to do with it.

lol the cpu is fine for Hammer. But playing TF2 on that thing is another story. Are you sure that ram reading is correct? There's a big difference between Kernel memory and Physical memory. 2815 mb isn't even enough to run windows, lol :( If you like, I can link you to some good deals. I put built my current rig for just over 5 big ones, and that includes my copy of Oblivion on DVD. Anyways, I stand by my previous statement; get a ram upgrade, and you should see a big increase in Hammer performance.

Keep in mind the CPU is an AMD, so its equal to the performance of a 3.4 GHz Intel. :-D

Yeah, that ram should be about right. I've got 3 gigs, though 250 is read because of a flaw in the 4th slot of my motherboard. ATI has released a recent driver update, and I did that. Seems to have fixed the in hammer issues, though I've only messed around with it a bit. However, the SDK is still slow to launch.

    1. Check to make sure your hard disk isn't terribly fragmented.
    2. Use windows task manager to see how much memory is being used by your various apps.
    3. Make sure your WinXP is up to Service Pack 2.
    4. Do you have a virus checker on? If so, tell it to ignore your sourcesdk folders. Otherwise it will do a virus scan on every file you open.

Might be #1. Other computer has tons of extra room so it defragments nicely. This one, not so much.

I've got 2883048K of physical member, according to the task manager, and currently I have 2324xxx available. Should be plenty.

    Have SP2.

    No on the virus checker.
