Anyone know what the heck this stuff is for? The new Manifest bar and the Instancing menu? It's the first real new feature they've added to Hammer since I can remember, but there's nothing about it in the "Source SDK updates" blotter (which they haven't updated since 2006, possibly because there was no way to view it anyway until the new Steam UI).

Oh wait they're talking about it in the other thread. It looks like it's some feature from the Left 4 Dead 2 Authoring Tools...

OH MY GOD DOES THIS MEAN I WAS RIGHT AND EVERYTHING'S GETTING PORTED TO THE LATEST SOURCE BUILD TO COINCIDE WITH THE MAC PORT

I don't know about manifests but I know instances are like prefabs, but all the information is held in another vmf file until the map is compiled. It is used in The L4D2 tools yes, for such things as the generator you fill up in scavenge mode. I'm not entirely sure how it works, I've just messed around in L4D2 tools more than anything.
I can see this being useful for stuff like payload carts etc. and maybe repeated brushwork or displacement work (like hoodoo's).

there's also a new displacement thing called sculpt

it looks like it could be extremely useful, if I could figure out how to use it

i remember icarus saying something about him carving in cp_observatory. Your argument is invalid.

carve can be a usefull tool as long as you clean up the mess it makes after the fact, but it is something that someone new to mapping should never get in the habit of useing.

Sort of like hook and slice shots in golf - you need to learn how not to do them first before learning to do them intentionally. Same with carving - sometimes it is the only way, but it needs to be used sparingly because there is usually a better tool.

With enough experience I've found that anything you would want to do carving is better done with vectors and clipping. While carving is faster, you'll be more efficient and have better optimization using the other tools.
