I installed couple models and sounds (from here: http://source.maxofs2d.net/index.php?dir=sfm/ ) I checked the files and they seem to be in correct format. I installed them in the tf folder and I skipped the models, textures that were already in the folder.
When I opened hammer everything seemed fine, but when I opened the map I was making earlier hammer crashes. New map works well. Earlier I installed the files from this thread: http://tf2maps.net/downloads/sfm-beta-content-for-hammer.1275/
Since there wasn't all of the models in the file, I decided to download all of the models from the original website.
After that the hammer stopped working as said above.

    Any ideas how to fix?

I think I found the reason for the errors, when trying to open some of the textures this message pops up:
    Error loading vtf texture

    Error:
File version 7.5 does not match 7.0 to 7.4

    Could this cause the crashing?

This means that the models you installed are using vtf version 7.5 for their textures, wich is not supported by the TF2 engine or Hammer editor. You simply can't use these models, I'm afraid.

you could probably use vtfedit to change the textures to png and then make them to 7.0 vtf's again.

Yeah, but there are couple hundred textures and models, so it would take a long while

Whenever you're dealing with Source Engine textures you NEVER want to use a format besides .TGA
