[Fun] sd_glass

    Righty guys. I'm currently making a fun-map based on the glass maps I knew from CSS. I always had loads of fun on those maps so I made on myself. This is my first complete map ever. I know it's not pretty (It was orange before, but since you guys hate orange I fixed that ;)), but it's quite fun with big teams (tested some previous beta's on a 32 max server, and it was received well I think).

    It is a sudden death map, so the server needs to have sudden death enabled.

    Features:
    - Nearly everything breaks
    - Some solid floors throughout the map, including spawn. That give damage when you stand on them (stops people from camping).
    - Damage in spawn after 30 sec.
    - Damage on plates in front of spawn after 15 sec.

    Been playtesting a bit, and it seems I must have messed up with the medi packs. There should be small medikits scattered, but I think I messed something up :p. Anyways, those will be added. I think the map is pretty nice to play :).

    Known problems:
    - Wall @ blue spawn doesn't hit door.
    - Glass shatters in pink because I don't have cubemaps yet. But I think performance will degrade very much if I add them (at least a friend says so). Anyone got a suggestion?
    - No medi kits

    And I really need idea's to make it better looking :)

    To do:
    - Decals concerning NOM NOM NOM NOM (if you know what I mean). I made some in TGA and converted them, but they turn out black in hammer :S.
    - NOM NOM NOM NOM sound when somebody hits the kill zone @ the bottom. We have the sound, how can we pack it in the map?

    Im really sorry koei most of the time i actually post the best as I can but i just lose it when i see stuff like this. Keep it at counterstrike or whatever you want but dont release this or ill get the pitchforks :p

    Can't wait to see stuff from your cp map on the other hand.

    It's in a very early stage. But I don't think I'll announce it here when you comment like that. You shall see it popping up sooner or later.

    [pothead voice]Snipergen, you really need to just go with the flow.[end pothead voice] Everyone appreciates a large, well laid out, well detailed, optimized map. But there are many people out there who have ADD and dont want to go over to counterstrike to do something different. heck, in some ways TF2's cartoony graphics make it MORE conducive to zanyness and fun maps than CSS's more realistic graphics and modern day setting.

    The only way to avoid getting negative feedback is to avoid getting any feedback at all. Learn to mentally filter what people say to you. Your reaction will not help you grow as a mapper any more than his reaction will.

    Indeed. I like the normal game, but sometimes I just need a bit of fun.

    I updated the first post. Fixed the issues mentioned before. Just need to do something about the medipacks, they don't work because it's sudden death. I think you can only pick them up once. We are changing the healing to red colored glass healing zones (that can break). Should provide enough healing and fun.

    Please. Don't get me started on this. The only thing I would need help with is how to do certain things (google can do that) and optimizations. Gameplay wise I don't you can teach me anything ;). Also notice the presence of the word "here" ;)

    Oh I noticed the word here. You're just too dense to realize that I'm telling you people are going to trash your maps anywhere you go, unless you go someplace where people can't tell you anything.

    But you're so good you don't need anyone's input, I guess. Just remember, pride comes before the fall. If you don't want the advice of people who have far more experience than you and you don't think different perspectives are at all important, go have fun making crappy maps somewhere else.

    I asked for constructive criticism instead of the stuff he posted. I fail to see how that is my fault. I just pointed out the irony in is post.

    And about mapping experience resulting in good gameplay? Many custom maps look amazing but play like crap. I'd rather play on a orange map with good gameplay than some random awesome looking custom map. Mapping experience will result in good looks, good optimization and fast results. It does not guarantee good gameplay.

    All Smitz was saying was that people say stupid things everywhere, just because Snipergen said something you don't agree with you say you're basically leaving this community, that doesn't make much sense.

    Then Smitz called you dense, that WAS a little rude, lol :p, but you did kinda totally miss the point of what he was saying.

    Experience doesn't guarantee good gameplay, or anything really, but it helps alot, optimization is essential to good gameplay.

    I tend to agree with you, BUT to me it's a shame that the ppl from those (few) good orange maps don't take the time to make it a TF2-map.
    Like most (not all) ppl here, I favor the TF2-look in custom maps from TF2. Doesn't mean I don't play fun- or orange-maps of course.

    Second, you clearly named the thread "FUN map", so ppl knew what to expect :)

    My constructive criticism on the map itself has to wait till I've played it. Will look for servers next time. If you like to have an opinion, it is nice to have played it ;)

    Im gonna say that it actually might look better as an orange map, because it looks like everything blends together with those textures.

    thats like saying just because an artist can paint a beautiful picture he doesnt know how or why he used the techniques and strokes to make the piece of art.

    an artist knows what he does, why and how.

    if he never took the time to learn the skill, he wouldnt be an artist.

    my thoughts on this map/subject:

    people are doing amazing things with the source engine and SDK

    you are not trying to be one of them.

    people will give you shit any time any day that you believe something's potential should be squandered on developing for an obsolete system

    funmaps were ok in cs because it was a horrible system to begin with
    they needed something to make it fun

    While it's true that good looking maps =/= good game play, you are infinitely more likely to see a map that plays well from someone who knows what they are doing.

    To say that you can't be taught anything by other mappers in terms of game play is so arrogant I don't even know where to begin. No one knows everything about anything. To assume you do is one of the biggest ways you can make an ass out of yourself. See your comments about orange maps having good game play (any of them, I don't care which one they all play terribly).

    While I particularly am not a fan of gimmick maps, I'm willing to take this for what it's worth and not crap all over it. I wish you luck with it, and even more so I wish you an attitude change because the second you became so arrogant to not take advice on gameplay of your map, is the second you become a failing mapper.

    Stopped reading there. Because I know you are wrong. How do you know what I am doing with the SDK? If you see a new car outside in red. Do you conclude that all cars of the same model also are red? No, you don't.

    @ Scoobing: quote me where I say that all orange maps have good gameplay? I'll give you 50 bucks if you do :). Gameplay wise I know the direction of this map, and I playtested it for several hours now with up to 30 people playing it (unlike you at the moment ;)). And if you want to talk about gameplay: most custom maps have flaws. Even the very populair ones, like castle. I know the guy who made it is one of you. It looks nice, but gameplay wise it could use some changes.


    And to make it all clear: I don't mind comments on the map. I do want them. But I don't want comments like "this is rubbish", "Should I get my pitchfork", I don't have any use for that kind of comments.

    if you cant handle the opinion of others, dont show them your work in progress

    this was simply my critique and thoughts on the map and subject at hand

    it was not meant to be a personal attack.
    i should have said you are not trying to be one of those people WITH THIS MAP.

    i apologize for any intelligence i may have insulted.
