Explaining level design to a non-gamer?

Most people understand TV shows and have a little knowledge on how they are made. I see mapping as being similar to the set designer for a show. You are creating the place where the actors perform. You control the size of the acting area, set the props, and prepare the lighting.

That's true, the whole lot of it! I think we've found our answer.

I tell them a few things.

First one is I'm making a giant world with houses out of Lego's, but on a computer.

and 2 my call of duty and halo friends, (which is like 80% of the school), I tell them I'm making a multiplayer map.

And then my orchestra teacher saw me from across the room working on this and was like cool, are making FPS maps? I used to play doom a lot and then he started talking about the Doom movie with the Rock in it.

And it is even harder to explain TF2's art style to a non-gamer. considering most people wouldn't even think games have an art style

I'm trying to explain that style to myself, much less anyone else! :)
