Hi :)

Would like to know what the commonly used stair / step size is?
I know the ratios, but its getting that precise step size that i need to tackle.

Would be great to know the common step size in hammer units if possible.
Thank you :)

Don't know the common, but I use 8 high, 12 long, I guess? Since the ideal ratio is 3over2up.

EDIT: GO AWAY AGENT

stairs should be 8 units tall and 12 units wide. or a 2:3 ratio

Well it should be mentioned that something like 16 units tall and 24 units wide is usually really ugly. 2:3 ratio isn't necessarily good looking, just remember that.

is Valve's 1:2 ratio any better?
If so, what are the advantages? If not, what are the disadvantages?

Would like to know for future reference :)

I believe Valve uses 8x12 as well (sans the last point on Gorge, of course).

Use whatever fits best , but never go over a rise/run ratio of 3:2 , even that looks incredibly steep.

in practice, you can usually make stairs any size you like that looks "right" and shove a player clip volume over the top of them to create a smooth ramp. what looks right can depend entirely on the stair's context and surroundings - tall, narrow stairs tend to create a cramped, old-fashioned feel while broad, short steps look more modern and open.

I personally find myself using 1 up for every 2 forward more often than anything else.
