    Just like with everything in life, people have strengths and weaknesses. This thread is about your strengths and weaknesses in mapping. This could even help determine who to best collaborate with when you do so :rolleyes:

    List some of your strengths and/or weaknesses pertaining to mapping.




    I'll start:

    Strengths -- health/ammo placement and gameplay flow prediction.

    Weaknesses -- lack of detailing experience and constructing paths between major points of interest.

    Well, I find detailing enjoyable and I guess I'm decent at that. And I'm not too bad at general brushwork and displacements either.

    However, I lack complete understanding of the engine and optimization.

    Strengths - Anything to do with entities, clipping and detailing
    Weaknesses - displacements, staying on a map for more than 4 minutes

    Alright, here are mine.

    Weaknesses: optimization (I know how to func_detail and nodraw, but that's where my knowledge ends), Completing a map and daring to release one, ...
    Strenghts: Sketching and blocking out maps, details, displacements (love those :D), the thought that a map needs to look good from the beginning (not sure if that's a real strenght though), ...
    Might look odd and all, but that's how I think about it. :D

    Weaknesses: Detailing, coming up with what to make, staying on the same project for more than four minutes (like Owl)

    Strengths: Detailing, general aesthetic theming ideas.
    Weaknesses: Scaling gameplay areas correctly, balancing gameplay in objective areas (e.g areas around CPs), laying out/subdividing brushes correctly to avoid non-sewable displacements. And I know nothing about proper optimization.

    Strengths- detailing and have days that I'm good with displacements and some not
    Weaknesses- Lighting(lol) hmmm and making a layout and making layout better*Edit and putting done metal and health :blushing:

    Decent at:
    -Detailing
    -Vertex

    -Advanced brushwork
    -Optimization (I get lost after portals even there im kinda confused)
    -Displacement
    -Finishing my map before getting an idea for a better one :/
    -And of course showing my projects some love

    I'm horrible at detailing, but my mapping friend (who is good at detailing) claims I'm good at layouts.

    But if we are talking about what I have trouble with, it's probably creative detailing...

    EDIT: I entirely forgot my worst enemy: Time.
    I'm terribly slow when I don't have a plan (always).

    This is an interesting thread, maybe we could take it up a notch by offering some advice for the poster above you if he has a Weakness that you consider your Self an expert on..

    Strengths: General Ideas of what will be fun, Flow and Prediction, Class Balance
    Weaknesses: Entities (Probably just because of my inexperience) and Optimization (Again, I just need to learn that by doing some of it, which will be coming up soon in my Map)

    Strengths
    I have an amazing capacity for remembering stuff I'd never need to know, so alot of things I get told about entities, optimization etc I generally remember.
    I have a good eye - I can see small things that would annoy me ingame, and fix them.

    Weaknesses
    Never completed a map past beta
    Never even tried to detail (I s'pose this one will come when I complete the one above :p)

    Most weaknesses I guess can be more or less overcome with practice.

    Strengths: I'm a mean displacement maker. Relatively good at entities. Fairly good at detailing. Im pretty good at texture creation.

    Weaknesses: I. Can't. Make. Buildings. I get mappers block, stuck with proportions or layout of the insides, I just cant do it without a reference picture, even then I struggle. I'm also fairly terrible at layout when it comes to buildings. I love outdoor areas and vistas, therefore a lot of my maps are too open.
