I also suggest cutting your displacements up into 4 parts and setting them to power 3 instead of power 4. power 4 displacements are just asking to cause problems.
I would like to point out that this won't actually fix anything. Power 4 disps won't always and forever crash a map - new mappers are usually told to avoid them because they tend to make faces too small for power 4, creating a very high-density displacement. Cutting a 512x512 power 4 face into four 256x256 power 3 ones results in the same tri density and therefore will cause the same problems.
