My friend and I like to play dustbowl. We have for about 5 years now. We play on community servers so we can use are custom models and cross-hairs and textures. I myself have textured dustbowl into a nice green paradise.

Now, some of the servers seem to be running a custom version of dustbowl. One server has couches all over the map. Another server has it to where you can build right in the re-spawn rooms. One server has increased the time to cap point number of 2 of each stage to 30 minuets.

MY question is this. How are they able to edit a map like dustbowl and players join there server and not have to download a server specific version of dustbowl?

All of this would have had to be done with server plugins. I used to play on an achievement server a lot and they were able to modify logic and place props around the map. They launch the server with the default map then add/change different triggers or properties while in game through admin commands.

If you are interested in the plugins, you can find them on forums.alliedmods.net. Here are two threads I found that would explain what you were seeing! -

I think you don't need plugins to host a custom map do you?

In most cases, no. But altering a map's entity data without distributing a modified version of said map is only possible with Sourcemod scripting. Don't forget that some custom gamemodes like Deathrun and Prophunt rely on plugins as well.

The original post specifies that they don't want a custom map.

You don't even need sourcemod at all. See Stripper:Source which only requires metamod and can basically do anything you can imagine within a map's lump 0 file

Thank you for your reply's and your links. I have learned so things from reading them.

I have read your links TBH, most of the stuff they said went over my head. I will just stuck to map making.

In quake all we had to do was edit the entity file and upload it into the maps folder and the server would just read the entity file and apply it to the map. I was kinda hoping it would have been something that simple in tf 2 also.

I did look over some of the plugins that was listed and some looked neat. I know the server that I admin runs Sourcemod and Metamod so I will talk to the host about some of these plugins.

We once played on a server where the attacking team was humans and the defending team was all engine bots. If you know the name of that plugin or script then please let me know.
