Is there a difference between clip and playerclip? I've seen both used in maps, but they don't seem to do anything different in terms of gameplay.

Toolsclip blocks bullets. I'm pretty sure that's the only difference. (protip: look at .vmt's if you want to find out for yourself :p)

In TF2 they are effectively the same. (no "clip" blocks bullets)

I thought clip blocked every object (like the player and physics objects), which is more useful in other games like HL2 and Portal.
Then player clip only blocked the player, but nothing more.
And blockbullets does what it says and I think also blocks the player.

Pain in the ass. Have to make two clips, a player and a block bullet for stairs. LAMMMEE.

No, blockbullets will stop players. Blockbullets is actually nodraw (i.e. solid to everything), except set to translucent so it doesn't block light or cut leaves.

In boss raid mode there will be a difference, mark my words. :p

Also magenta is much more fashionable than red.

Playerclip blocks players. Clips block everything except light (I think)

    Nah

This. Clip Blocks players and NPCs, which TF2 is currently lacking, so it makes no difference at all.

    Isn't the HHH an NPC?

My understanding of clip was that it affected NPC's and the player whilst player clip only affected the player. I had no idea it blocked bullets and physics as well. clip has been used once or twice in TF2 maps. I guess it depends on the author. They each seem to have their own style.

    IIRC:

    • Playerclip: Stops players, allows rockets, stickies, sandman balls.
    • Clip: Stops players, also stops rockets stickies, sandman balls, etc.

So the real choice is what you want those projectiles to do. I prefer playerclip for anything that has to do with "smoothing" the map out, because it means I can provide a wider or sloped area to walk on without confounding player expectations about what happens if they aim at a given spot.

While we're having this conversation, is there a way to make an entity brush that blocks everything but can be turned off or made non-solid through a trigger? I've noticed that, for example, the dynamic prop that makes the final cap in payload maps is non-solid to ragdolls, and I'm wondering if there's a way they could have avoided that.

I could easily be mis-remembering, I've had my head down in code-about-maps rather than actual maps for a long time now, but perhaps you could be just a tiny bit more detailed in your correction?

I think if you had read the rest of the thread you would see why he is being so brief with you. The question has been answered several times, and people keep coming in to suggest the same (wrong) answers.

I think i might use clip on stairs in future, one of the most annoying things for soldier is shooting a rocket at the wrong step and having an enemy avoid blast damage from a rocket that exploded only feet away from them.
