This is something ive been thinking about for awhile now, ive seen a few people do and im wondering how you go about building the custom 2d skybox images

The part that is escaping me is how you can manage to make it look seamless when connecting to the top and side. Is there a program that can do both the image editing and maintain a 3d view of the skybox? Or are the connections just made very simple?

An example of how one person did it would be very helpful.

There's a good program to generate realistic landscapes, called Terragen.
You can download it here: http://www.planetside.co.uk/content/view/16/28/
You can find a script here that will render a 6-sided skybox at the correct angles.

If you're not going for a realistic skybox and you have Photoshop, there's a seamless texture plugin that works great. I would recommend this one called Seamless Workshop: http://www.redfieldplugins.com/Downloads.htm (download the 9 filters package which includes the "Seamless Workshop")

Hope it helps.
