    Let's make some bets

I bet rae is the one who says "I have a bad feeling about this
I bet the reason we're not seeing any luke in the trailers is because he's not really in it.

Movie opens with introductions to the new 4 main characters. Opens with kylo, introduces finn who leaves the first order to meet rey. They both then leave jakku with han and meet poe. Calling it now.

I loved the film. This is my second favourite, right behind Empire. I was the second to arrive at my cinema, and stood in line for 5 hours. During the film, the crowd clapped twice. Once at the start, and again at the end. It was a fantastic experience.

    Now to the film.

    Rey
I loved her. I love her. She's strong, dominant and smart. I love that they have left her story to be told yet. I feel as tho she could have tapped into the force far earlier into the film, but the way she fought in the final fight was amazing and breathtaking.

    Finn
John Boyega did such a fantastic job. The shot of Finn, refusing to slaughter the civilians was so powerful, and gives you a reason to follow this traitorous stormtrooper. Loved his humour, in fact I loved all the humour in this movie. Finn wasn't cheesey, he was somewhat wise and strong when he needed to be. Really glad his spine wasn't cut to bits in the final fight. I was really worried they were going to QuiGonn us.

    Poe
    <3

    Han + Kylo
OMG. Father and son. Ben Solo. Han's death was predictable from the moment that scene began, but that doesn't mean it wasn't heartbreaking. I loved Kylo's turmoil. His hatred of himself. He knows he's just a pawn in Snoke's game but he feels that he still has a choice. That he can truly redeem himself. But still, he kills a huge part of himself. His own father. Brutal.

And this carries on into the forest fight. Every time Kylo could rest during those two duels, he kept hitting where Chewie nailed him with the bowcaster. It was so captivating. Rather than protecting his wound from more pain, he uses it to channel hate. It was powerful. It was amazing. When Kylo tries to twist Rey, to turn her to the dark side knowing that she is only just discovering her power, you can see he wants to use Rey to break free of Snoke. But Rey is stronger than the dark side and uses his moment of mercy to focus. To calm her mind.

And that final fight was so intense. So beautifully shot. No one in the fight is trained to use a saber in combat so they swing predictably and try to simply overpower one another. And can I say that Kylo's saber is badass. This guy watches me sleep now so I'm feeling safe. Got a poster.

OVERALL I absolutely loved the film, and while it does reuse themes from 4 and 6, it stands alone so well, and is a solid start to the new trilogy.

    5/5

I too have seen the movie.

It was great for the most part. Good characters and really exciting action. I'm really dissapointed that it is pretty much just a rehash of A New Hope, just bigger and dumber (as in sometimes REALLY dumb). It hardly contained any surprises (except for how similar it was to A New Hope). I really hoped there would be some kind of role-reversal between the Empire and Rebellion powerwise.

It would say its on par with Return of the Jedi maybe? I think I might like Jedi a bit more, but Force Awakens is at least a LOT better than the prequels.

What did you like about Poe @Uncuepa ? I hardly cared about him at all?

(I originally wrote a lot more, but I had to cut it out, since it's getting really late, and I could babble about this movie for eternity)

Entirely disagree. Yes, it borrowed a similar structure, but to be honest the real meat of the movie was entirely different and extremely enjoyable. In Hope you had Vader who was a dominating, no nonsense guy. Kylo is far from that. He's conflicted, he's on edge and he is trying to kill Ben. Vader was dead inside, but I feel kylo can be turned.

I love aerial battles. I love xwings and tie fighters. And that long shot of poe just fucking tie's shit up was amazing. You could tell this guy demanded respect. Hell, he's the generals right hand man. Cool, calm and collected 24/7. Kept his humour during the most dire battle of his life. What's not to love?

Never said that they fucked, just that Maz likes him. Just because I called Daisy Ridley my girlfriend doesn't mean she is that.

5/5 Movie, The characters drove the plot so incredibly well for a typically plot driven series.

    EVERY reveal was done perfectly

Except the reveal of Kylo's parentage. I felt that happened a little too early.

    I liked it!

    Bad things:
    • Daisy Ridley is so posh it took me a while for me to credit her as Rey, the rough-and-tough scavenger, and not Rae, Head Girl at St Trinians. She did totally convince me though, eventually.
    • I liked Poe, but there wasn't much of him. Now Han's gone, we can get back to Poe/Finn, BroTP.
    • Finn's defection was moving and all but seemed very quick indeed. Dude goes from "unwilling to kill" to "willing to murder a bay full of stormtroopers" in about thirty seconds.
    • Sometimes it was funny at the expense of the tone - this particularly jarred when the stormtroopers backed away from Ren's outburst. I know he's meant to not be an especially terrifying villain, but that sort of thing kills his credibility. Also C3PO's entrance... again, a joke at the expense of the tone of the scene.
I liked the rest of it though.

Here's my take on these issues

This speaks to Rey's origins. Very few people on Jakku speak basic, so she has kept her original accent. This was described behind the scenes as 'high coruscanti', or the same way the senators from Coruscant do. This is a hint at her parentage.

Loved him, and a comic and parts of Aftermath reveal that his parents served the Rebellion with Leia and Luke, and fought at the Battle of Endor. This character is awesome!

Stormtroopers are trained to ignore fallen comrades, and the first thing Finn did in his first battle was to comfort a fallen comrade. He was never a true stormtrooper.

The stormtroopers backing away from something scary happened multiple times in the OT. Twice in ANH, the mouse droid backing away from Chewbacca and the Stormtroopers running from Han. It was just a small bit of classic slapstick. As for C3PO, yeah it was abrupt BUT it's a call back to 3PO interrupting Han and Leia in Empire. I loved both these moments. The only joke I think felt out of place was Han and the trash compactor. He hated the trash compactor on the Death Star, it would have been a foul memory. Yes it's tongue in cheek to the audience but it's out of character.

This added to it. If even the storm troopers think the guy is unhinged and avoid him, then damn, that guy must be really mentally unstable.

I think the moment was posed as unreasonably comic - it got a big laugh in the cinema. It could have been done, I think, but I think it was pitched for humor a bit too much. Uncuepa described it as slapstick and i agree.

He was raised from birth as a stormtrooper: trained, indoctrinated, never given a full name. The first time he sees a comrade fall, those orders go out the window, because of his feelings for his comrades. He is then asked to murder innocent people and he doesn't, because of his respect for their lives.

Ten minutes later he hops in a tie fighter and blows up thirty of those comrades with no respect for their lives whatsoever.

I would have credited it more if he'd been less gleefully willing to start shooting - there was no need for him to shoot at that time, and if he'd only started fighting back when escaping the planet in the Falcon, after he'd already been shot at, I think it would be less jarring. As it is, its a very abrupt heel face turn.
