Are you sure that in the VMT they are named and placed correctly like :

    "$basetexture" "folder/texturename"

    ?

you shouldn't include the ".vtf" in the basetexture

    "$basetexture" "signs/SignSappingBlue.vtf"
    becomes
    "$basetexture" "signs/SignSappingBlue"

You can use your editing program to create a 512*512 area that is transparent then cut what you want from the old poster and paste onto the new area and make that into a .vtf as transparency makes everything else that isn't used to be transparent when placed.
Gimp is an ideal free program as you can create the transparency pretty easy.

If you want an ugly fix, just change EndU or EndV (don't remember which is which) to a number lower than 1, testing different settings until you got the right side cut off.

It's not the "right" way to do it but it's the only way I can get the official door overlays to not have a black border on one side.
