koth_chargingstation was a good map that I was working on, but my computer ran into some serious issues and I had to reset it to windows 8, wipe the hard drive, and then upgrade it back to 10.
Could I decompile the bsp of the most resent update and still get the map back?
Or would the VMF I get be not worth it, and just abandon the map...
Can someone link me to a good article or tutorial on doing so?

Yes, all you need is BSPSource. The vmf will be mostly intact, enough that you should have no problems fixing up any broken entities and getting back to mapping. If you repacked the bsp then you will need to uncompress it first.

And this is why you store your VMFs in Dropbox!

I dont think making and using a dropbox account would be worth the blue moon save, also I could've easily avoided this by using a USB, but I was lazy and thought it might be recovered.

Or any cloud-based, or network-attached, or local storage service/device with a file synchronisation application/service. For example: Dropbox; rsync; Synology CloudStation.

Decompilation will not result in the same file. Compilation is a lossy process. The decompiller will need to guess the lost data.

What you should be doing is looking for the hammer autosaves. I think there is a folder in the hd root dir as well as the wmx backup copy next to the vmf file.

Autosaves won't help you if your entire drive needs to be wiped, though. While BSPsource isn't perfect it will do a pretty good job if your map is relatively basic.

Decompiling isn't even that bad. The worst thing it does is make all your displacements 1 unit thick (which is a bit annoying).
