So, Bang! did a software to convert a full map into a single model and he hasn't share it with the community?

    Here is the full interview.

I'm a bit disappointed about this, almost all the programs that we use are from the community for the community (unless the official ones).

NOTE: Don't say nothing about Propper.

While I don't know the specific program that he's talking about (and if it's something already published), there is WallWorm and VMF2SMD.

Huh, the paragraph after shows he had to create a seperate decompiler as well for it. Maybe if people ask nicely? :p Could be some trouble releasing the tools he used since Softimage is a paid for product, a product that is not going to be supported beyond 2015.

Being able to convert a whole map into a model is overrated. The lighting would be all janky and it wouldn't cut vis. The new lightmap-based lighting won't help either since it relies on the whole model having a unique, non-overlapping UV unwrap. Specifically useless for anything you converted from a brush.

Excuse my ignorance, but what would be the difference between XSI and BANG's software? If there's any,of course.

    They do the same thing,right?

    Just saiyan...

XSI is a 3D modeling program, like Maya, 3ds Max, Blender...
His software can transform a hammer editor file (vmt) to a model or something to edit on XSI. With that, you don't need to remodel a map for make animations like this:

You can export a .vmf to .fbx or some other format that can then be imported into most modeling programs, but that doesn't handle displacements or normals very well IIRC. Still, it's better than nothing I suppose.

People always claim that their stuff isn't ready for release. They are too hard on themself. And they refuse to acknowledge the fact that they simply wont do the cleanup they want to.

Dude's under no obligation to put out unfinished software because other people want it.

Sucks that a single company has bought out and monopolized the entire 3D modeling app business, but continues to maintain all the competing apps out there instead of folding them into a single unified program that everyone can standardize on.
