Since my first map is almost ready to release, I'm wondering whats the purpose of the Alpha and Beta stages of a map? What do you do in Alpha stage that you don't do in Beta. Also, how do I upload a map.

The definition varies from person to person.

Generally I'd consider any map that is complete enough to be capable of playing a full game is in beta. Alpha would be anything less than that (eg. only two rounds of three built).

Release Client (RC) is any map that you would be ready to ship out and spread around as an official release (fully textured, etc. etc.) but is going through final testing to find any remaining cosmetic issues (although major bugs can crop up too). It's the "We think we're done. Are we done? OH SHIT, BUG! *fix fix fix.*"

Other people would say that my definition of alpha is "pre alpha" my beta is "alpha" and that my RC is "beta."

The standard around these parts is alpha is the point at which you are putting 90% of your effort into gameplay refinement, and once that is done you go to beta which is 90% making it pretty.

Alpha: Gameplay testing, layout and basic gameflow.
Beta: Bug fixes, detailing and polish.
    RC/Final: Final polish and changes.

Yes, you will want to add the suffixes to the end of the filename. It prevents any conflicts resulting from different files with the same name.

Personally best definition of Beta i found in valve's dev wiki:
"Beta is when you think your map is completely finished and working. Then you wait for other people to prove you wrong."
