Now, this would be something I'd post in the regular old general steam discussions.

But I did. It didn't help.

So, my problem is, I have a disc write error. Reinstalling doesn't fix such a problem, and verifying the game cache is proving ineffective. I tried backing up my custom content and straight up deleting the tf folder, but it said that it was still being run! I had steam closed, and I even checked the task manager! Could someone please help me out? Please?

Important: I should also mention that once it get's to 100% it says the download has paused

I had this problem on my tablet. After many failed attempts, I just reset the 64GB hardrive back to factory reset. Worked a jem.

Umm... let me repeat what I said: Re-installing doesn't work

Does anyone know how to shut off the program that is working with the tf folder so I can delete it?

This may seem obvious, but is Hammer open? TF2 tends to get stuck on updates while that's running.

Well, considering hammer doesn't even exist in the folder, I'd say no.

Yes, the executable itself doesn't exist in the tf folder, but it still uses files in that directory.

Well, I checked the task manager. I didn't see any signs of hammer running.

VVIS, VBSP and VRAD are all the culprits for that, mainly VVIS or VRAD. If you've restarted since the issue arose though, it's unlikely thye will be there.

K, so, restart the computer, then delete the tf folder?

Not necessarily. Restarting may help to fix the problem, but you can kill those compile processes manually from the processes tab of the task manager. They can sometimes linger after Hammer is closed, so it would be worth checking.

Well, the TF folder has been deleted, and the game is installing now.
If it still doesn't work, I'm gonna eat my last meal and jump off a cliff.
