Played with one today in the store.

    Kinda disappointing.

    Here's why:
    • Tiny baby screens (compared to my DSi XL anyhow).
    • The introduction of the buttons at the bottom and the reduction in size(again from the XL) makes it ugly as a mouldy peach, just like the original DS.
    • They say a foot of 'wiggle room' more like 5cm. I couldn't find that sweetspot where it was nice and just right.
    • Wikipedia reports the battery life at 3-5 hours or <8 hours when using the old DS mode so that's pretty useless for any kind of long journey.

I cannot see how this is worth the huge pricetag, if you don't have a ton of cash to throw away, wait until they introduce a second generation with larger screens and a better battery life, or wait until there is a seriously mindblowing game for it, which definitely isn't release day.

Anyone else played with one yet?

Yup, played it at an event last week. I pretty much have the same complaints, plus that I don't like the slide that much either. It works in 3d games but in 2d games I sometimes accidentally pushed down.
I'm still getting it for ocarina 3d, probably not at launch though because no games

I'll wait until one drops for me randomly (it really isn't worth it and there's plenty of emulators for the proper DS and GBA games)

    Well that's kind of unfair

But yeah, the fact that companies are already making third party charging docks for the battery is a bit obscene.

I never really saw much that was special about the 3DS. Yes, it is OMGZORS 3D WITHOUT GLASSES but is that really necessary? Other than that, it's simply a DS with a really short battery life and smaller screens. 3D with no glasses was a good idea that wasn't done well, IMO.

I do, however, have a couple of friends who are obsessed with the damn thing. Meh.

Ouch. I hope they don't pull a Wii and decide this is such a big leap forward that they can discontinue and stop supporting the plain-old DS line.

I think I might wait for the inevitable 3DS Lite or whatever the fuck it will be called instead of getting screwed over for buying at launch.

I disagree with the importance of most of your points (Except battery life. Just wtf is that all about >:| ), but considering I haven't tried one yet, I guess I'll just wait until I receive mine in the mail... sometime early April I guess, since I'm a cheap bastard and ordered free shipping. Then again, I'm not buying any games (I kind of considered Pilot Wings just to see the 3D, but then I realized it had that ugly Wii Sports style), so I guess I'll have to wait even longer, until something worthwhile comes out.

I just hope my opinion will differ, is all I can say.

Eh it's not really unfair, the most recent in the DS line has 4+ inch screens, and the 3DS goes backwards to just over 3 inch screens. So this is a step backwards.

jfyi that's generally what happens all the time and is no way exclusive to the Wii. I remember when the GBA came out, and all of a sudden no new GBC stuff! :O shock horror!

The DS is unusual in that there are a hundred different versions of it. (oh I guess there was that fold up GBA which was back lit. what was with that?)

The GBA had the GBA, the GBA SP and the GBA Micro. The DS has the DS, the DS Lite, the DSi, and the DS XL or whatever. Not terribly different.

The SP was just Nintendo finally not making a shit handheld. Not that the others were unfun, but come on.

what was not cool was that Sp was created after the DS release (or at least version 2)

And I don't know what you are talking about stopping the game line after a new release. They've done that with every system they've done, in Nintendo's case they make dual releases having it on the new and old system then discontinuing it but making the next system cross compatible. Other companies are a lot tougher on this where they release a new system and cancel the old right on the release date like Xbox where as Nintendo discontinued the Gamecube almost a year later.

I also don't see what is so special about the DSiXL. It was just making the screen bigger and not really that big of an upgrade and made it not as handheld as the DSi.

That was the GBA micro that came out after the DS. Also, I think it's highly unlikely that people will begin to develop games solely for the 3DS. There is probably a lot more work involved making a game for it, and most studios would probably see it as just a gimmick, tbh. Besides, the 3DS isn't a standalone platform. It's still a DS, nonetheless. I agree on the last point. Why would I want a pocket console that doesn't fit in my pocket? You seely, Nintendo.

No they actually released a second gameboy Sp along with the micro with an improved backlight in 2005 after the release of the DS and actually most of the actual launch titles for the 3DS are 3rd party games like Street fighter 4 and Dead or Alive. It is kind of gimmicky but ALL 3D is is a big gimmick. It is just taking it a step farther and making it portable and improving it. Nintendo has actually been in talks with studios like Dreamworks for 3D movies that are released on the console (and I believe you can watch your own videos).

Hm, now that I think about it, I guess I remember that improved SP.

I guess I can see the appeal of a portable 3D media player that doesn't require glasses, but I just don't think I'll pay for an entirely new DS for that. I was happy with my DS Lite when DSi came out, and I am now, too. Unless there's something completely awesome that makes me want to get it, I can't really see myself springing for it for a while. (perhaps ever)

The video game industry and the film industry are the same: use 3d to jack up the price.
