Please tell me this is a troll thread.

Fuck you guys are serious?

....great tuts and really explains things well to get any mapper started....Have fun!
Nosh.

No. These are HORRIBLE tutorials. If you knew ANYTHING about Hammer you'd recognize this. He teaches HORRIBLE habits. For any one good thing he does he teaches about 4 things bad.

DO NOT RECOMMEND THESE TUTORIALS. DO NOT WATCH THEM. DO NOT PROMOTE THEM.

Heh, I already added most of those here quite some time ago:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Level_Design_Video_Tutorials

ARE YOU NUTS? I've removed them. KEEP THEM GONE. DO NOT ADD THESE.

Do not make the average mapper worse. When we say "Go to the VDC", we don't want them finding BAD shit like this. We want to keep the standards of VDC up there. Adding shit like this only DEGRADES.

DO NOT DO IT. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT POSTING THEM.

Yikes. I take it they must be pretty bad. I've only bookmarked them for future perusal.

Unbook mark them. They will only teach you evils.

I'm starting my own tutorial series soon. Probably Monday.

I think your kneejerking a bit here.

I'm not completely disagreeing with you, some of the time he's completely off, but more often then not he's correct (or at least mostly correct). I'd say it's wasteful to discount all of his videos because he was wrong a few times. Everyone makes mistakes.

A screencast series or text based?

I think he's joking.. there was a recent discovery of a video tutorial series on youtube that teaches people to create a sphere, and to carve it into the ground to create uneven terrain. Which got linked here..... somewhere.

Pick a video of his. Any video. Your choice. I'll prove how wrong it is, or come up with 5 videos with as many wrongs as that one.

And Screencast series.

Then perhaps i've only seen his better tutorials where he manages to avoid making an arse of himself.

edit: except his hint tutorial. That was amusing.

What bad habits does he teach? He says to keep to the grid, dont use the carve tool.

Didn't see this earlier.

You shouldn't run HDR because it makes VRad run twice.

You can speed up compile by setting VRAD and VVIS to fast. Go ahead and release the map like this.

Maps can take up to several days to compile.

1. I don't remember him saying this, but I havn't seen about half of his tutorials.

2. I remember him specifically saying that you should set it back to normal for the final release.

3. Yeah, so he was wrong. He probably hasn't made an epic valve-quality map so he wouldn't know.

Do you really want him teaching people bad habits? :|

I mean, I don't mind him teaching that you can do fast compiles, etc.

However, HE NEEDS TO SAY WHAT IT DOES.

Just saying "It makes your maps compile faster" does NOT help anyone. People will take it at face value and ignore everything else cause it makes their map compile faster.

However I would have been fine if he had said like... "Valve implemented a "fast" mode to both VVIS and VRAD. What this does is xxxx for vis and this is important because xxx does yyy." and same thing with vrad.

All right, find me 5 of his videos from here where a new mapper would have either gained nothing of value or be in worse shape (ie they gained only wrong information or they were told something so bad it overshadowed any valuable info they might have gathered from the video) after having watched them. I've tried to at least partially watch all the videos of his I added there, but I haven't watched all them from start to finish.

And Screencast series.

Interesting. I was mostly just curious, I had tried to do a Hammer screencast series myself a while back with CamStudio. I never got anywhere though as I fubared the settings before I recorded everything and ended up with an unfixably mangled audio track.
