got my friend's old computer, brought it home plugged it in the light in the back was on. So I turn it on only for it to shut off 4 secs later so i turned it back on again and lasted for 2 secs and now it wont turn on anymore and the green light in the back does light up anymore. I tried differnt outlets and waited a few mins before trying again. Ive come to the conclusion that something is very wrong. Does it sound like the power supply cooked itself?

Maybe, or processor.

Depends on how old it is however, most newer processors have protection not to do that.

Could be because heatsink wasn't fitted properly.

Is the light on the motherboard on when plugged in?

Try resetting CMOS

no the computer doesnt even turn on
no power no nothing its as if it's not plugged in.

im talking to another friend and he said i could be the supply so before taking it out i did one more test and the power was back on. But then i went to move the comp to position it the light in the back disappeared once again.

I've had computers do similar things when their motherboard went bad. I'd check power supply then motherboard, then cpu

i got it now! I ended up throwing in a new powersupply and now it works like a charm. thanks for the help.

I recently dealt with a computer just like this for someone.

The problem was a faulty relay in the power supply in which the power supply was the only thing to be replaced. It's usually broken or shorted by surges (like the cord being kicked out from the wall or power failures in lighting storms). :blushing:

The solution for now is buy a new supply, take the old one out, note the connections, place the new one in, get a surge protector on the power for the PC and fire it back up.

If this doesn't solve it it could be another problem but we get there when we get there.
